Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple interviews following England's defeat in the second Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, after Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, he revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
